Biographies

James Bourn/Burn was a political prisoner from northern Ireland.
Arriving on the Hercules 1 in 1802 it seems he was moved to the Windsor area as the 1806 muster indicates. It is not known to whom he was assigned until he was given his freedom in 1808.
He lived along the Nepean River until c1830 when he moved to his 1812 land grant at Cobbitty, which had been granted to him by Governor Macquarie.
He married Mary Atkins in 1813, who arrived on the Minstrel in 1812, their marriage registered at St Matthews Windsor. They had one child, Mary Burn born c1815. James spent time in the Blue Mountains, probably hunting for food and following Aboriginal tracks, becoming familiar with several routes into the mountains.
After his wife Mary died at Castlereagh in 1830 he made the move to Cobbitty with his daughter and her husband.
James died on his small farm at Cobbitty by the Nepean River on 12 Nov 1852.
(Note: His name was Bourn on the Hercules indents, usually spelled Burn, occasionally Byrne.)
