Biographies

George Barton
Born 1795 in Thornton Lincolnshire England.
Son of William Barton and Sarah Horton.
29 March 1822: George Barton, together with two accomplices, committed highway robbery near Caistor Lancaster. They robbed John Twigg of Market Rasen, of a silver watch, a greatcoat, a one pound note, a canvas purse and other articles.
3rd April 1822: Arrested and held in Lancaster Castle.
20 July 1822: George Barton received a death sentence that was later commuted to transportation to New South Wales.
July 1822 to April 1823: Held on the prison hulk ‘Retribution’ moored at Woolwich.
28 April 1823: Departed London aboard the convict ship ‘Henry 1’.
26 August 1823: Arrived in Sydney.
04 September 1823: Assigned as a convict servant to Mr W.J. Brown.
1825 Muster: George Barton at Bathurst.
24 July 1826: Hyde Park Barracks, Sydney, NSW. Two days on treadmill for coming into barracks after 8 o'clock.
1828 NSW Census: George Barton listed as serving a life sentence, 30 years old, Protestant, a government servant and overseer on Sir John Eale’s Hunter River property.
23 June 1829: George Barton married Catherine McNamara (born 1812 in Castlecomer, Kilkenny, Ireland) at Church of Christ, Newcastle, N.S.W. Catherine’s mother and siblings were free persons who had followed Catherine’s convict father, Patrick McNamara, to NSW in 1828.
24 November 1834: Granted a Ticket of Leave (No.38/979).
29 November 1836: Received his Certificate of Freedom.
01 October 1841: Recommended for a conditional pardon.
04 October 1841: Granted Conditional Pardon.
1853: Overland to Victoria, family at Ovens.
07 April 1872: Died aged 77 years. Buried in Beechworth, Victoria, Australia.

George Barton was the father of William Barton, Thomas Barton, George Barton, James Barton, Frances Barton, John Barton, Richard Barton, Mary Ellen Barton, Alfred Barton and Jane Barton.
