Biographies

Charles Heath GRAY is the correct name for the above Charles Grey. The error is a common one where the scribe writes what he thinks he hears and generally refuses to correct same. Charles was born in London son of James GRAY and Katherine HEATH. He arrived in Norfolk Island early in 1800 and entered into a relationship with fellow Convict Susannah ASHMAN. The couple had five children on NI and were repatriated to Sydney where they were married by special license in 1810. Three of the island born children survived, five more were born in the colony. GRAY was a clerk in the Naval Office and lived in York St where he died in 1857. His daughter Mary Ann (widow of DICKSON) married Frederick Michael STOKES one of the partners who started the Sydney Morning Herald
