Biographies

In approximately 1688 our Family the Lardent’s, who were French Huguenot Silk Merchants, were forced to flee as Refugee’s from Luneray in Normandy France to London’s East End, due to the laws of forced Catholicism being imposed by King Louis XIV, we refused to convert as we were Huguenots (Protestants).

After approx. 140 years in London’s East End the “T” was removed from our name Lardent to Larden by William and Sophie Larden, with one of their Son’s being the Convict Robert Larden.

Robert was sentenced in the Old Bailey to 7 years and a one-way ticket to Australia. But documents from the Old Bailey show Robert was standing in the street talking to someone when a thief who was being chased down the road pushed the stolen goods into Roberts arms and ran off. Robert was taken into custody by Police who accused Robert of being an accomplice to the crime, which Robert rejected and claimed innocence, but they refused him justice.

It's interesting to note that the Ship “Heroine” Robert was transported on was full of male only convicts, many of whom were tradesmen, and it made it to Australia in record time. Sounded like they needed tradesmen in the colony and they were plucking them off the streets.

Robert served his sentence in Morpeth NSW and on being released as a free man he married Rebecca Robson, and they had a Son named Henry.

Henry Larden moved to Tamworth NSW and Married Harriet Prince where they had several children, and it is from these children that most Australian Larden’s originate from. One of their Sons was Sydney Larden (my Great-Grandfather) who moved to Sydney NSW and Married Blanche Lofts, and also fought in the Light-Horse Brigade.
