Biographies

Josiah was born on 27th Sep 1828 in Tenterden, Kent, England to parents Josiah and Hannah née Fletcher and baptised at St Mildred's Church on 17th May 1829. The census of 1841 shows the 12-year-old lad living with his family at Mill House, Headcorn, Kent where his father worked as a Miller.
Josiah was indicted for stealing 1 ring, value 14 shillings.; 3 shirt-studs at 18shillings and 1 watch-key at 10shillings. Also I crown, 1 half-crown, 2 shillings, and 1 sixpence, 1 sovereign, 1 half-crown, 2 shillings, and 1 sixpence; also 1 half-sovereign, 1 crown, 1 half-crown, 2 shillings, and 1 sixpence - the goods of Thomas Pacey Birts, his master; to all of which he pleaded guilty. Aged 19, the verdict was passed that he should be transported for Seven Years.
Transported 1st June 1849 aged 21: Sent to Moreton Bay on Mount Stuart Elphinstone.
Josiah married Teresa Ann Mackey on 6th April 1858 in Dalby, at the time in NSW, but now in Queensland, and died on 28th August 1896 in Dunwich, Queensland.
He had been admitted to the Benevolent Asylum in Dunwich, Queensland as blind and infirm. His admission statement reports that he was a publican for many years in Dalby but for the last 2years was employed as a labourer.
