Biographies

Joseph Burley was convicted of receiving a stolen watch in London in 1831, and was transported for 7 years. He was recorded as a 'good' cabinetmaker, fairly short at 5' 3½", heavily tattooed including the name of C. Murrell and initials EW, JB, crosses, wreaths, an anchor, streak and serpent, and blue ring tattoos on two fingers. He was assigned to Edward Cory who owned the property of Gostwyck in the Hunter Valley, and absconded in 1836. He received a Certificate of Freedom in 1839. He is the same Joseph Burley who was among the purchasers of land in Queen Street, Brisbane in 1842. A few years later he bought two blocks of land in Elizabeth Street, Brisbane, and lived on the corner of Elizabeth and Edward Streets for many years, raising a family with Eliza Morrison (no marriage record found). The death record for Joseph Burley in Canterbury, Sydney, in 1883, is probably for this former convict. The informant was Alfred Burley, his son.
