Biographies

Thomas Collins was born in Feltham, Middlesex, England in 1823 the son of Thomas and Sarah Collins. In 1838 at age 16 he was convicted in the Central Criminal Court of stealing tools and sentenced to 3 months in jail. In 1839 still aged 16 he was charged with stealing 5 loaves of bread and sentenced to transportation to Australia for 7 years on the ship "Parkfield". Thomas Collins was given a Ticket of Leave in 1845 and assigned to the Clarence River district and finally granted a Certificate of Freedom in April 1846. In June 1846 Thomas Collins married Caroline Sarah Chantry, who was born as Caroline Sarah Davey in 1828 in Madras India. Her parents died during an outbreak of cholera when she was 3 and she and her sister grew up in a Military Orphanage in Madras. At age 16 Caroline, her sister Ann and other girls age 14 to 16 were brought to Australia on the ship Duchess of Kent as army orphans. In 1856 Eliza and Elizabeth Collins , sisters of Thomas Collins arrived in Australia and also went to live in the Clarence River district where Eliza married Alexander Logan who had arrived from Canada. Thomas and Caroline had 6 children before Caroline died in 1865 at the early age of 39. The Logan and Collins Families were 2 of the earliest settlers in the Clarence region. Thomas Collins later remarried and moved to Sydney and died in 1881.
