John was tried and convicted at Inverness Court of Justiciary on 29 July 1817 and sentenced to 14 years transportation

John arrived Sydney aged about 20 aboard Tottenham on 10 October 1818 with his Indent showing alias McIntosh ( he would use alias Petree in some later records)

Within a short time John had partnered with William Powell (Tottenham 1818) in bush ranging activies and fell foul of the law
