Biographies

Thomas Evestaff, was born in Leighton Buzzard UK in 1761. He was a basket maker by trade and was married and working in St Albans, UK in the 1780's. He was convicted of Grand Larceny (theft of 3 Silver Tablespoons and 1 Silver Teaspoon) at Kent Assizes in 1795, and sentenced to 7 years transportation. Arrived in NSW on the Barwell in May 1798.

Thomas was a basket maker, then brewer in Pitts Row. He had 4 children in a de facto relationship with Mary Reed (Transported on the Nile 1801). The eldest 2 children John and William drowned aged 1 & 3 and were buried at the Old Sydney Burial Ground in 1806.
(The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser)

Thomas and Mary were able to return to England, and traveled back with their younger two children (Mary Ann and Thomas) in 1811, residing in Surrey, London where they had one more child Phebe, who died in infancy. No record of Thomas' or Mary's death has yet been found. Their daughter Mary Ann and son Thomas both married and have many living descendants.
