Biographies

Herbert together with Joseph Burridge (General Hewitt 1814) and John Pearce (Indian 1810) and Edward Scare (Admiral Gambier 181) committed piracy on 7 April 1814 by taking control of the schooner "Speedwell" at Newcastle and escaping the Colony. they have not been seen subsequently. Research notes

Herbert was convicted at Calcutta of piracy on 4 December 1809 and sentenced to life transportation, he arrived Sydney aboard Eagle on 17 February 1811.

Herbert was transferred to Newcastle aboard "Estramina " on 23 April 1813 and is later noted as escaping on 7 May 1814,with three other convicts. Source; NSW Colonial Secretary Index 1788/1825.
