Biographies

George Hellier was married in Bridport on 18. 12. 1798 to Elizabeth Rendall ( 1772 - 1844 ) and prison records say they had 3 children. His birth is a bit of a mystery - other records show he was born in Minterne Magna on 27th June 1778 to Stephen Hellier and his wife Betty Pople, but Minterne is not very close to Bridport - the record only says Son of Stephen ie no mother's name shown to confirm - did he move for work ?

He is recorded in Dorchester Prison aged 36 of Allington, Bridport on 3rd March 1813 a Pattern Maker on suspicion of stealing a black gelding and of stealing two pairs of boots - sentance fine of one shilling and 12 months hard labour.

On 4th May 1814 he was back in Dorchester Prison with a trial at Dorset Assizes on 27th July 1814 on a charge of Horse Stealing - sentance of death was reduced to transportation for life and on 26th October 1814 he was moved to the prison hulk Laurel in Portsmouth Harbour. He sailed to NSW on prison ship Baring leaving 20th April 1815 arriving 7. 9. 1815.
