Biographies

Convicted of Burglary on 26th March 1817 and sentenced to death, this was commuted to 14 years' transportation. Sadly for Austin, having suffered from a habitual cough for several years previously, he fell ill ten days into the journey with severe thoracic pain, dyspepsia and a troublesome hacking cough. Despite the efforts of the ship's surgeon George Fairfowl, he died on 24th October 1817, aged 46.
