ISABELLA TAIT

BORN:

Isabella Taite on 9 August 1833. The birth was not registered until 1840 in Launceston, Tasmania (Ref 1032). Father registered as James Taite and mother as Isabella Mills. The name Tait has been recorded as Tate, Tait, Taite and other close spellings. I assume this is because they could not read or write and the register/clergy recording the event spelled the name as they thought it sounded.

MARRIED:

John Marr Stonehouse on 8 November 1847 aged 14. The wedding certificate (ref 30451) indicated that her guardian consented to the marriage.

CHILDREN:

Eliza Jane Stonehouse, 1848, Belfast, Victoria (BDM ref 30069).

John Thomas Anderton (Stonehouse), 9 June 1850 Hopkins River, Warrnambool, Victoria (BDM ref 31792,1851).

George (?), 12 May 1852, no ref found.

The reference for John Thomas is from a baptismal record from the Anglican church in Warrnambool. It can only be assumed that he was given to the Anderton family to raise him. His wedding certificate has the surname Anderton crossed out and Stonehouse written above. It may therefore be possible that George was also given to someone else to raise. On his paternal fathers death certificate he is mentioned as George, age 21.

DEATH:

Unknown. There are references to her giving birth to a son George on 12 May 1852. No birth certificate reference has been located. John Marr Stonehouse remarries in 1854. It is assumed that Isabella died sometime between 1852 and 1854.

Personal History:

Isabella’s father James Tait was a convict who arrived in Tasmania in 1819 aboard the Hibernia. He was to serve 14 years. Isabella’s mother was Jane Brabyn Mills. Her first husband disappeared at sea in 1816. Isabella had a brother George Tate, born on October 1821. The birth was not registered until 1832 in Launceston, Tasmania (Ref 4507). Father registered as James Tate and mother as Jane Mills.

James Tait convict record suggests that he was incorrigible. More detail will be added to James Tait from his convict record. His record indicates that he received another 2 years followed by 7 years for indiscretions.

Both Isabella and George used the name Mills. This could be because James Tait was serving his time elsewhere in Tasmania and with two half brothers (John 1810, Charles 1812) and a half sister (Eliza 1814) they lived their younger life as Mills. The two half Brothers (John Brabyn and Charles) despised James Tait and they left home at a young age. James Tait convict record indicates that he had an opportunity to be with Jane Mills around the time George and Isabella were born.

Isabella’s half brothers were successful whalers and moved to Port Fairy to set up a whaling/sealing station, circa 1835. John Brabyn was particularly successful and all four siblings were involved in the family business.

Passenger records show:
