Biographies

Sarah Austin, daughter of William and Jane Austin, was baptised at St Martin's, Birmingham on September 18, 1770. She married John Bartlam in St Philip's, Birmingham on 30 January, 1788.

Sarah Bartlam was one of 80 prisoners tried at Warwick Assizes, and one of 19 who were capitally convicted. Her alleged crime was robbing William Mitton of bills and money. The Judge respited Sarah's sentence to transportation for life in consequence of her pregnancy. Sarah was transported to Australia on the "Mary Ann" of the Third Fleet, leaving England on 16/2/1791 and arriving in Sydney on 9/7/1791. She left with 150 female convicts and 9 of them died on the journey.

On 24 December 1791, 5 months after arriving, Sarah married Francis Garland, a convict from the First Fleet in St Philips Church of England Sydney. Its not known what happened to Garland after this.

Sarah Bartlam married John Sullivan on 11 April 1797 in St John's Parramatta Church of England. Its also not clear what happened to John Sullivan after this.

By 1806, Sarah Bartlam was John Bagley's housekeeper. She was reported to have had one daughter, but its not clear how old the daughter was. She was living with Abraham Kemp in 1814, 1822 and 1825.

In 1828 Sarah was a servant to George Hall in Pitt Town.

On 8 May 1835, Sarah Richards (late Bartlam) (of the Mary Ann, arrived 1791) had her trial and on 8 June 1835 was transported to Moreton Bay in what is now Queensland. By 1839 the penal settlement was disbanded and any remaining prisoners were sent to Sydney. This included Sarah, who was granted a ticket of leave.

Sarah died in 1848 at the Factory, Parramatta and is buried at St Patrick's Parramatta. Her burial records state her age as 76 and date of burial as 2 January 1848. Her occupation was a servant and she lived at the Factory in Parramatta.
