Biographies

Benjamin Coomer was born in Blagden Sommerset UK. toGeorge Coomer and Elizabeth Coomer (nee Harden) in 1815 christened May 14th 1815 previous criminal activity stole handkerchiefs and spent 6months in jail. 1936 he was convicted and sentenced to Life in Australia he spent time in Ilchester Prison then placed on the Hulk York in Portsmouth Harbour before leaving on the ship Strathfieldsay for Australia via Rio. Benjamin Coomer on arrival in Australia in 1836 was sent to Wm Arnotts farm "Glenalvon " on the Page River near Murrurubdi.Married an Ellen Woods of Maitland 25th August 1846,First child named Benjamin George Coomer born May 18 1848 .Benjamin received a ticket of leave to remain on Liverpool Plains in the care of a Mr Curtis for a period of 12 months.he received a conditional pardon 1849,the condition being he was unable to return to England.
Benjamin had another child born Elizabeth Ellen Coomer Feb 28th 1852. his wife was 8months pregnant with a third when Benjamin Coomer died at Maitland June 18th 1853.
His Wife Ellen then became associated with a James Fo;ey O'Neil (one L) and they had other children not associated with my blood line.
Benjamin's first born changed his name thru life as he was only 5years old when his father died, he finally married as George O'Neil at Inverell to Mary Maher of Braidwood nsw,
they had several children one he name as George Cooma O'Neil .
I imagine he has been told about his Grandfather (Convict Benjamin Coomer) and possibly unable to read or write spelt his name Cooma instead on Coomer.
This person went on to become George Wil.liam O'neill (note the secondL) and is my Grandfather .
He went on and married Caroline Facer at Narrabri 1901,from this couple my Father William George O'Neill was born in 1903
George William O'Neill died at Tamworth 1935.
My Father William George O'Neill died at Warren in 1975
